It all began on June 3rd 1988, with Thushani, who was desperately
sick. The two year old girl had been abandoned at the Buddhist Temple
by her mother on two occasions and forcibly given back to her mother by
the monks. The bi-weekly medical clinics cared for this destitute
child. When Thushani seemed to be barely breathing, an urgent message
came to the Dehiwela Outreach Centre (DOC), that Thushani would soon
die if we did not help. After three months in the hospital Thushani
the first Lotus Bud, passed away whilst undergoing exploratory surgery.
In 1989 Lotus Buds formally opened its doors as a children’s home for children in crisis.
It is not the typical children’s home, it is a family and provides a
healthy stable atmosphere for the growth of 22 children, caring for
their physical, mental, spiritual and social needs.
Roger and Therese Koelmeyer enjoy parenting their family, while supporting them as they pursue their hopes and dreams. Though each of the children had a rough start, it is wonderful to see that they have grown up to be well adjusted individuals with the grace of God. The Koelmeyers have 3 children of their own too.
The family has blossomed and 6 have married, 5 are working overseas, 1 of them is serving on the Logos ship, 10 are employed locally and two of them are in school.
The family has expanded as the second generation put in an appearance as 2 grand children were born.
