The Process
Turning discarded items into cherished embellishments.
After people donate the supplies, women and children of the beach community can come whenever they like to make the jewellery. There is no obligation to come every day and Salvage is open for anyone to participate. The artists fold origami cranes, or roll magazine pages to make beads and hoops which are then attached to earring backs. Bottle caps are scratched in an artistic fashion before being attached to the earring. Everything from the jewellery itself to the packaging is handmade and recycled. The artists are paid the day they make the jewellery for the items they make. The money they make is enough to feed their families.
